Evans Field Notes 3 – 2/19

Location: Hugh Mercer’s Apothecary Garden
Date: 2/19/2017
Start Time: 2:00 pm
End Time: 3:30 pm
Weather: 70 degrees sunny and clear skies

I encountered this space being used as a public garden while surveying for another class. My previous prediction was that most people would ignore this garden, because of its lack of seating(only one bench) and the uneventfulness of a garden in general. My hypothesis was proven wrong during my early survey of the property, so I later returned a 2 pm to see how this space was used. The location of Hugh Mercer’s Apothecary on Caroline Street, the heart of downtown, is what I believe gives this area a number of visitors it has.

    Observations

One White Woman 35+
She was sitting on the only bench and greeting every visitor that came in. She did not work for the museum but was an invested community member who knew the location of every herb in the garden and its use.

One White Woman 35+ in a wheelchair w/ Hispanic husband 35+
They took a stroll around the garden, greeted the woman and I in on the bench and then left.

Two White Women under 35
Came into the garden and read the informational sign and left.

One White Woman 35+ w/ 2 children
She pushed her kids around the garden in the stroller and then left.
